Escaped migrant caught with false passport at airport
An immigrant from the Ivory Coast who escaped from a detention camp last night was caught at the airport trying to leave using a false passport.
Stephen Kybrene was arrested along with Maswell Asiadu, 29 of Ghana, who is resident in an open centre.
Both were taken to court accused of making use of false passports and jailed for eight months and five months suspended for three years respectively.
During the hearing, counsel for Kybrene said the migrant had not wanted to break the law, and had only wanted to get away because he saw no future for himself in Malta.

The government PASSAPORT OFFICE can provide an excellent FIVE STAR SERVICE with the employment of such talented ,efficient persons.!!!! The Issuing of PASSAPORT DOCUMENTS so fast, in a matter of a few hours' escape and unsuccessful departure at the airport .

How stupid...you cannot enter or leave a country from an airport without a valid passport...and yet you can enter a country without any documents if you are on a boat at sea!!!

'jail term suspended for 5 years'- this implies that these migrants are forced to stay in Malta for at least those 5 years due to their suspended sentence.
Moreover, even if they are sent to prison that may prove to be more of a burden to the tax payer!!!

Has anyone considered the possibility that the immigrant (and probably others) already had a false passport on their unwelcome arrival?
Are these illegals strip searched for false documentation or other contraband?

@ T. Gauci - where exactly in the article does it say that no one is investigating? Do you expect the authorities to send you a note or sms to inform you what they're up to?

They should be forced to walk it to the Ivory Coast. Shocking behaviour yet again.

Immigration security and control should be on the INCOMING side not on the outgoing side.
You have inverted your resoning.

Well done for the airport authorities for catching these two illegal immigrants. This means that Malta has a very strict airport immigration security in the world of terrorism. It does not make sense who says that they should be allowed to leave as if nothing is happening.

There is no political trouble in the Ivory or Ghana and there they do not qualify for refugee status, why were these two illegal immigrants allowed to roam free in Malta and even aquire false passport? This is shocking.

He entered Malta illegally, he has committed a crime he needs to pay for this crime, the sentence handed down is pathetic. Of course there is no future in Malta for him and NO future for the rest of the immigrants. When he has served his sentence deport him along with the thousands of others. Unfortunatley Malta will have to bear the cost of deportation. Which is very sad, hopefully Malta can get the money from HIS goverment, although I doubt it. Soooo the EU will end up paying for someone who does NOT come from an EU country.

Where was Mr Kybrene trying to travel to; there are no direct flights from Malta International airport to the Ivory Coast. Silly me, he was probably trying to get to the United Kingdom and the generous benefits system that illegal immigrants enjoy in that country at the expense of the British tax-payer. And yes Mark Muscat, "let him leave" but back to from whence he came and not to another EU state where he will be as much as a burden as he is here in Malta.

Why were they not allowed to go away?
Are they going to be repatriated once they serve their sentence?

This guy needs to tell where he got the help here in Malta for his false passport, and presumably he had a ticket as well?
Since as an illegal immigrant he would arrive with next to nothing (certainly no papers) he must have had help from local criminals - these are the ones the police should arrest and prosecute. False ID is just what the terrorists need to get hold of and use, so whoever makes these documents is a very bad criminal, they 'open the door' to the bombers.

Most irregular immigrants did not force their way in illegally. They were rescued at sea.

No futrue for the youngsters with diplomas and all sorts of certificates, private tuitors etc.,etc., as long as your arm,let alone the migrants. No wonder this immigrant wanted to get away, but then again who can blame him? we got the sun and the sea but one cannot eat the sun or drink sea water, there is a different world outside folks.

this sounds very ironic when considering that
1) we are letting them in...
2) we are not letting them to go away
3) we are trying to solve the problem
somehow this doesn't add up...

The police with the collaboration of army personnel should make
a make a search up to the least detail to ensure that these
false passports are not being produced in one of the open
centres or elsewhere. Their post should be checked so that
nothing of this nonsense is received from friends (terrorists)
from abroad.

That's a very valid reason why someone would want to leave somewhere!!

a comment and a question:
C: he has already broken the law by forcing his entry into the country;
Q: who is supplying these people with false passports?
