Roberto Martinez's appointment as Wigan's new manager was plunged into chaos yesterday after a row over the cost of taking the Spaniard's backroom staff from Swansea.

Latics chief executive Brenda Spencer appeared supposedly at a press conference called to unveil Martinez as successor to Steve Bruce at the Premier League club.

But there was no sign of the Swansea boss and Spencer revealed that the formalities over the Spaniard's move could not be completed until a deal was reached over his support team.

Spencer, who left the conference promising further news soon, said that Wigan had been unable to contact Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins but were hopeful of concluding the deal imminently.

Wigan insist the deal is still on and are ready to continue negotiations over the additional staff.
