Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning visited the new extension at Malta International Airport.

Previously an empty space separating the arrivals lounge from that of departures, the area was now a commercial one housing shops and restaurants

This, Dr Gonzi said, was evidence of the country's resilience in times of difficulty. He thanked the investors for their faith in Malta and for putting their money where their mouth was.

That investment was undertaken during such a difficult period was positive, he said.

The total investment, including resurfacing works on the runway, amounted to around 25 million euros.

The new area was blessed by Archbishop Paul Cremona. Finance Minister Tonio Fenech and Tourism Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco, together with former Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech and former Transport Minister Censu Galea.

Dr Gonzi also visited an exhibition on the history of the air terminal in Malta since 1922.
