Maltese travel to the UK up by a fifth
The number of Maltese going abroad between January and April increased by 5.1 percent to 82,387, the NSO said today. Travellers to the UK were up by 21 percent
Of these, 86.7 percent travelled to EU destinations, with the most visited countries being, as usual, the UK and Italy. Travellers to the UK increased by just over a fifth, with the Maltese clearly benefiting from the low exchange value of the pound sterling for some good bargains. In contrast, travel to Italy was down 11 percent.
Outbound tourism in April alone reached 24,984, an increase of 31.2 per cent over the corresponding month in 2008, but one has to bear in mind that Easter was in April this year, and March last year.
The biggest age group of Maltese travellers was in the 25-44 age bracket.

Ref:-Jeff Wilcox, thanks for your admiration for my country much appreciated, however i wouldn't shout too loud, otherwise will have all your countymen flooding into tiny Malta, we are already over crowded with other immigrants, We know Britain's weather is very unhealthy dump and dismal as someone already mentioned,so i say to the British welcome to Malta but please do not over stay your welcome we are far too small to accommodate all on long terms unless ofcourse you got plenty of cash to spend and not rely on our government.
Just being fiar, i'm sure its the same in the UK.

Yes true Miriam we are British and agree with you in every sence of the word, Britain is Not Paradise never used to be and never will be. I am sure glad i married a Maltese woman, good looker, good cook, inteligent and to top it all up we are happily retired in her country of birth where the people just can't do enough for us., i just like the Maltese way of life, their hot blooded nature in every way, more then i can say for my own cold blooded British with a dry sence of humour and F'this and F'that -they all gone bannans in England i do admit and if it weren't for my pension i wouldn't give Blighty a second look let alone live there, besides Malta is a healthy country, a nice tan and an extension to my life span by at least 10 years, in Britian they are dropping off like flys. and who would want that certainly not me. Three cheers for Malta and the Maltese i say.***

Maltese travel to the UK up by a fifth.. well folks i am one that will not be travelling to the UK, i've learned my lesson, remember all that glliters is not Gold and Britian is certainly not paradise, now Malta and Gozo well that is a GEM in itself, no wonder every Tom Dick & Harry from outside these shores give their right arm to be able to enjoy life as we Maltese do, regardless of politics or somber comments, be honest where else can one enjoy life in a safe envirement and also strolling along on the promenade on nice cool summer evening, certainly not in UK. come clean admit it? Your comments are out of line - you obviously live in a bubble and are highly influenced by the media. I never see crime on the UK - i know there is lots of crime just like in Malta, but your comments are rather silly.
We are almost 70 million people - if Malta was 70 Million your crime statistics would be similair. The UK is a fairly safe country - parts of our inner cities can be a bit dangerous agreed thanks to uncontrolled immigration.
Malta can be a very dangerous country - your roads are deadly dangerous and death on the roads happens far to often. Drivers speed through towns in Malta making it deadly for children and pedestrians and the police just ignore it, there is regular violence in paceville, stabbings are not uncommon and neither is muder with Guns. cold and dismal? We have a temperate climate with plenty of water. Our water supply is not under threat and neither is our fertile land turning to dust - tread carefully when you talk about the UK we contribute a vast amount of your GDP

This increase was contributed by hunters who are spending their money in UK, the same country where we were most criticised with the support of RSPB and BLM.

@ John. I think it has more to do with the € spending power, against the £.

Who in his right min want to leave this great safe beautiful sunny island to go to a cold, dismal and unsafe country such us Britain? certainly not me. Listen to to-days BBC news and you'll know what i mean. But cause there are also the cheap cars to import into an already over populated country with these cheapies, but most likly will be surprised on their return as the customs are for ever ready to punce on them.

Interesting statistic. Could it possibly be related to the increase in imports of second hand cars from the UK? I see a case for the re-introduction of departure tax, or any other sort of tax here. After all, what was the original logic for introduction of departure tax?
