An e-mail airing serious concerns about the dumping of a harmful chemical into the sea to reduce the effects of jellyfish stings did not make sense, the Department for Environmental Health said.
It said that in the past few days it was inundated by concern from the public receiving this e-mail.
"The department however assures that there is no room for concern, particularly since the source of this e-mail is unknown.
"Furthermore, it does not make any logical sense to dump chemicals in the sea, taking into consideration that chemicals will be diluted hence reducing drastically their effect. The way the e-mail is written is also without any scientific basis."
The department called on the public to report any illegal dumping on tel. 2133 7333 Mondays to Fridays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
