Far-right voters mainly uniformed men - Muscat

Most of those who voted for far-right candidates in the MEP elections were members of the uniformed forces and those in the forefront of the illegal immigration problem, Labour leader Joseph Muscat charged yesterday.

Dr Muscat said such people wanted to get the message across through the European Parliament elections that mainstream political parties were not heeding their pleas on what they experienced on a daily basis.

He was addressing a press conference with Labour's MEPs Louis Grech, John Attard Montalto and Edward Scicluna and observer MEP Joseph Cuschieri.

Dr Muscat said the Labour Party (PL) wanted to hear these people as much as it wanted to hear those who did not vote, those who voted for other parties and sympathisers who did not vote.

The party was committed to listening to the messages sent on Saturday. In fact, although the election had passed, the party was holding an open day at its headquarters in Ħamrun to listen to what the people had to say.

Commenting on the landslide victory at the EP elections, in which the PL won a 55 per cent majority, Dr Muscat said: "This was not a victory that could be achieved by any political party. It was the victory of a growing movement, which included many who never voted Labour before. The election result is a mandate for the PL to not only criticise but also offer solutions."

Dr Muscat said the satisfaction for politicians was that of improving people's quality of life. "People have sent a clear message that they are not happy and there were surely others, who voted for the Nationalist Party, who are also not happy with the way the country was being run," he said.

Asked how he interpreted the fact that the PL's votes had fallen by 6,000 over the March 2008 general election, Dr Muscat said the turnout had also been lower but he admitted there were PL supporters who had not voted.

This, Dr Muscat said, was not the finishing line but the start.

He said the news that the Maltese economy shrank by over three per cent in the first quarter was a major cause for concern because it had an effect on living standards and on jobs.

Replying to a question on whether each of Labour's candidates would be declaring their electoral campaign expenses according to law, Dr Muscat said the party expected them to abide by the law.

@JMartinelli look whos screwed up and immensely, your precious PN Government. I am sorry to say the Socialists Governments were always there to clear up their mess and to refill the empty coffers they find when they are elected. Its easy for you to comment why dont you come to live here? The burdened majority of Maltese gave you their answer, they are bearing the crunch and not you who most probably are sitting pretty with a huge Canadian pension with nothing to do except bothering us with your comments.
A. Bonello (on 12/6/09)
@ J Martinelli: Look who's talking. As if PN has not screwed up! Even though we are the country that collects most taxes, we still have the deficit rising to continue to overpay contractors for works not done properly. Unwise comments you say! PN has lost its direction, it is no longer a rightist party, thus Norman Lowell is a far better solution. Get your facts right! I will never vote for PN again now that we have a new leader in Norman Lowell
Charles DeMicoli (on 12/6/09)
@Ronnie Gauci: ....but, were you uniformed?

@ R Camilleri
Simple. AS far as i know ACs and others on duty like Police and Soldiers vote in separate boxes on the eve of the elections, just as those being abroad voted in a separate box. Each box has approximately 450 voters ( subject to correction). Hence calculations are not all that difficult. The election commission issues the results to parties of each and every box.

Totally agree with Ronnie Gauci.

I am normally a PN sympathiser, but after researching about Norman Lowell and listening to all of his speeches (the ones that got aired of course; the media didn't want to show his face anywhere!) I opted for him as the Number 1.

I also believe that I conducted more research into the candidates' profiles and track records than over 90% of those who voted for PN.

I made it clear that I was not happy with the approval of the present Mayor contesting once again on behalf of the PL for the LC elections in Marsascala. As a labour supporter I gave both elections a miss for my family and I felt betrayed to learn of the lavish grand reception organized by the Marsascala Mayor inviting over 3,000 people at Montecristo Estates in Hal-Farrug owned by magnate Charles Polidano, known as ic-Caqnu. Everything was for free. Transport, food and drinks that would have minimized some of the famine in Africa and not forgetting live music. All this paraphernalia just to elect a meaningless councillor or the most a Mayor! Dr. Muscat this PL candidate for sure has spent over and above the sum stipulated by law. Now are we going to hide behind sponsorships and would these sponsorships revert to obligations? To crown it all this grand reception was blessed by the PL administration for a high official was present. If things do not change I shall turn my back altogether on Maltese Elections. Far-right I will never vote but somehow I shall stay Far away from any voting booth!!!!
Ronnie Gauci (on 11/6/09)
I voted Norman Lowell and I knew what I was voting for and was well informed much more than 90% of those who voted Labour last week, after all my research and looking inside his party at present I also decided not to vote Labour for the first time in 17 years.

to Mr muscat. i know this is hard talk imma politics is a hard game. don't give out too much just sit back make a few comments and wait until the last year of the PN government. then land blast them with every thing. give them hell because it would be too late for them to make adjustments thats how victory is won i know its cruel imma thats how the world is . tactics use them

Jekk ir-razzizmu qed jeskala tort tal-inkompetenza ta' Gonzi li halla eluf ta' immigranti illegali hawn Malta meta ma ghandhom l-ebda dritt jigu u joqghodu hawn. Iktar ma jithallew hawn jisirqu x-xoghol tal-haddiema Maltin u jghixu bhal sangisugi minn fuq dahar il-poplu Malti u jaqilghu problemi iktar se jqum il-poplu kontrihom u iktar ikun hemm voti ta' protesta.
Chev Chris Galea (on 11/6/09)

Who said this; and how does he know ?? If this is really true , members of the Police Force are no longer transparent. They have to bide to the Geneva Convention. This law is often broken by dictatorships and Far-right parties. SHAME !
Marcel Dingli (on 11/6/09)
Ghandek ragun C Zarb. IL partit laburista spicca biex hu aktar lejn il lemin mill PN. Veru imisshom jisthu tal PN, jekk jafu kif.
J Martinelli (on 11/6/09)
Young Joseph has a mouth big enough to put his foot in it and hardly enough time to get it out before putting the other in.

What an unwise comment! So, first he embraced former MLP rejects and now he wants to 'talk' to extremists!

Way to go Joseph, but then with those pulling his strings in the background and, let's not forget Jason, nothing is impossible.

The LP will do anything to gain power. The problem is, when they governed, they always screwed up.
Steven Brockwell (on 11/6/09)
J. Cachia the world economic situations was just created by the media? its easy to solve. but then again why solve it when governments are pumping billions into banks and company's just to keep them open ???? would you not take the same advantage ? money for free
J. Cachia (on 11/6/09)
If the comments of Dr. Joseph Muscat are realistic he should keep this information confidential because I believe that no one likes to show to whom he voted especially the people he mentioned.

I think that everyone knows about the illegal immigration problem and it's not that easy to solve this problem. We'll better hear from him about the Worldwide Economic situation something that he never mention in his speeches. And again this is not easy to solve either.

Jekk il PL jaqbad it-triq li jibda jaqbez ghall-immigranti minflok ghall-Maltin, jaf xi jkun il-futur tieghu meta jaslu l-elezzjonijiet. Ghadu kif kellu ezempju car

ahjar naqbdu u nibghatuhom kollha minn fejn gew hlief it- 10% li huma rifugjati genwini.

@ c.caruana

Xi statement socjalista qed tghid?

Li intuhom il- vot, ic-cittadinanza, flat tal- gvern, xoghol mal- gvern u bandiera tal- Labour?
Steven Brockwell (on 11/6/09)
Mr muscat watch what you say? your votes come from all borders of life not just uniforms? the immigrant issue is a big one. however, focus on the cost of living. and the expenses related to all types of self employed.. sales have dropped and running cost have increased? resulting in job losses which intern also results in less sales and a bigger burden on the government? base this on the next cumming election and you will win. i know you read my letters because you have used my punch lines quite often. have a good day x
J Farrugia (on 11/6/09)
Mela joseph muscat mar jaqra l-voti tas-suldati u l-pulizija biex jallega li l-voti lil far right kienu tan-nies bl-uniformi?
C.ZARB (on 11/6/09)
Nahseb ahjar l PN jerga jigi partit Nazzjonalista u tal lemin ghax ha jaqla damdima fl elezzjoni generali kif qalaha fl elezzjoni tal MEPs.
R. Camilleri (on 11/6/09)
can someone please enlighten me how Mr. Muscat knows that "far voters were mainly uniformed men"?????????
c.caruana (on 11/6/09)
nahseb l-PL ahjar johrog bi statement socjalist ta' vera fuq din il kwistjoni tal immigrnati ghax ir razzizmu qed jeskala!!!
