The driver of a Nissan Primera was critically injured this evening after a collision which saw two cars extensively damaged in Burmarrad.

The accident happened at about 7.15 p.m. at the junction to Wardija. Both cars - a BMW and the Nissan - were pushed off the road into a gutter and trees with the force of impact.

The Nissan driver - a 30 year old man from Naxxar - had to be extracted from the wreckage by rescuers from the Civil Protection Department.

Two children who were in the Nissan suffered slight injuries.

The busy road was closed for some time.
