The Franciscan fathers in Comayagua, Honduras, have started rebuilding the episcopal palace and curia of Maltese Bishop Mgr Robert Camilleri, which was destroyed by fire just over a month ago.

The fierce blaze destroyed most of the 18th century building and took some eight hours to control.

Mgr Camilleri lost all his personal belongings but no one was injured.

The Franciscan fathers in Malta said the news was not released earlier in Malta so that the bishop’s frail mother could be assured of his safety.

It is believed that the fire started from a short circuit in a chapel close to Mgr Camilleri’s bedroom.

Most of the contents of a Church museum housed in the palace were saved, but priceless archives were lost.

An appeal for funds is being made in Franciscan church in Honduras and response has been generous.

Local donations may by made to the Office of the Franciscan Missionaries, St Anthony Street, Ghajnsielem.
