The Gozitan village of Ghasri was almost crime free last year - only five cases were reported to the police, according to information given in Parliament.

In contrast, there were 1,650 crime reports in bustling St Julians. the most peaceful Maltese village was Safi, with 30 crime reports.

The figures, tabled by Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici, show that the crime rate has been going down in the past four years.

There were 18,461 crime reports in 2005; 16,542 in 2006, 14,991 in 2007 and 13,803 last year.
