PN share drops in all districts
In the European Parliament election, Gozo gave the Labour Party a relative majority in the 13th district and reversed the result of last year's general election.
A district analysis of the votes cast in Saturday's election indicates gains ranging between five and six percentage points across all districts for Labour.
On the other hand, the Nationalist Party saw its share of the vote drop between eight and nine percentage points across the board, one year after winning a general election by the skin of its teeth.
In Gozo, traditionally a Nationalist stronghold, Labour took 48.1 per cent of the vote while the PN managed 47.5 per cent. The PN lost almost eight percentage points over its showing in the general election, although the lost votes did not pass completely on to Labour, which gained more than five percentage points over the 2008 election.
Labour also made important gains in the eighth and 12th districts bringing down the difference between both major parties to a mere percentage point.
In these two PN-leaning districts, the governing party only managed relative majorities.
The second district, former Labour premier Dom Mintoff's birthplace, delivered the biggest victory for the party confirming its traditional position as a bastion of support. There Labour achieved 72 per cent of votes cast against the PN's 24 per cent.
Labour's worst showing, even if it still registered an increase of five percentage points, was in the 10th district where it obtained 39 per cent of the votes cast.
Despite registering a drop of more than eight percentage points, the 10th district was also the PN's best result at 55 per cent.
Compared to the last general election, Alternattiva Demokratika saw marginal improvements across all districts and confirmed its stronger voting base in the northern districts where it obtained results above three per cent.
Norman Lowell's far-right Imperium Europa doubled its voting share from five years ago registering results above one per cent across all districts. In the 11th district it even surpassed the two per cent mark.
On the other hand, the right-wing party Azzjoni Nazzjonali saw negligible improvements in most districts compared to the general election result.
The newly-formed Libertas made absolutely no inroads among the electorate with its sole candidate gaining 298 votes nationwide.

Mr R.Gatt
Yes , like you said hunters here hunters there, yes we are mentioned by everybody ......so we do make the difference.
By the way . there are well over 3,000,000 hunters in the EU countries so 15,000 are nothing like you mentioned...... so what's the fuss???

OMG!!! Hunters and trappers really did make the difference!!! Hunters and Trappers this and hunters and trappers that.
That is why labour won the last election too because the hunters made all the difference. (Mind you, I don't give a hoot about either PL or PN. I hate politics.)
Ever stopped to notice that hunters and trappers represent a small minorty of Maltese society.
How many hunters and trappers are there in Malta? 15K? 20K? out of a total population of 400K? Not even enough votes to elect one candidate let alone make all the difference.
Face the reality. Hunting and Trapping is past tense. Get another hobby. Voluntary work pops to mind - definitely much more rewarding and satisfying at the end of the day than wasting time and money in killing and plundering.

Dr Gonzi please note that analizing all districts carefully, HUNTERS and TRAPPERS really did make a difference!!!!
Thank you FKNK and Dr. J. Attard Montalto

@ Chris Vella
You are wrong. For a great ex-leader he was referring to DOM MINTOFF.
THE LEGACY IS COMING BACK FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL OUR MALTESE AND GOZITANS BROTHERS AND SISTERS

Simply put, a well earned defeat.
Sign of the times.
The PN has lost it's glory due to jumbled up policies, half truths and lies. Incompetent government and an ego centric leader who is just clinging to power.
A very sad picture indeed.
The worst ever showing by a PN group of miscasts.
Simon Busutil is the only way for the PN. So well done to Simon.
Gonzi should resign on this forecasted defeat.
The sooner that the PN addresses it's obvious flaws and mammoth defects the better for Malta as it would have a very credible PN Government.
To remain status quo is just a catalystic position to more defeats
But Gonzi is still an inexperienced leader as he still have to understand to eat humble pie.
Dear Partit Nazzjonalista please replace Gonzi (ASAP) as a damage limitaton exercise as he got walloped heavily by a young Joseph!

@J...Camilleri...'People who stop at nothing to remain in power'
... true but only if it is democratically elected by the people to govern. And we all know of one person, whom you might refer to as your Great ex-Leader, who remained at the party's helm despite 3 general electoral defeats and a referendum. Is that not stopping at nothing to remain in power?

Just 15 months after March 2008 we all are witnesses to a metamorphosis, unique in the history of elections anywhere on earth.
In the March 2008 general elections:-
1. Voting population according to 2003 elect. reg. 294,106
2. New Voters in 2008 (NSO. Dem. Rev. 2003(3A): 27,898
3. Total : 322,004
4. Deaths 2003/08 (Malta in Figures 2003/7): 15,479
5. Net Voting population (2008): 306,525
6. Electoral Register Oct. 2007: 315,357
7. Discrepancy: 8,832
8. The 2008 electoral register was not verified at all. This exercise doesn't include effects of net migration, which after the 2003 brain exodus towards EU cities, would run to thousands of emigrants over imigrants.
9. The 2003 electoral register was ONLY partially verified since, after the Arnold Cassola court decision, MLP did not pursue further the usual verification.
10. This arithmetic exercise shows that the 2008 electoral register contains 8,832(+) unexplainable names. There should have been 8,832 names voters less in the 2003 electoral register. How did it happen? Ask the demigods at the Electoral Office, (most of whom, if not all, gonzipn fundamentalists). They may be able to give an answer, though I wonder how much they'll be willing to.

Back to the glorious days when is-Salvatur was the leader of MLP. At last! Prosit Joseph. You too are an excellent leader. But beware of the PN. People who stop at nothing to remain in power.
