GDP contracts by 3.3% in Q1
The Gross Domestic Product shrank by 3.3 percent in real terms in the first quarter of this year, following another decline (0.3 %) in the last quarter of 2008.
The NSO figures, which confirm the Maltese economy is in recession, show that in the first quarter of 2009, GDP amounted to €1,315.2 million, a decline of 1.0 percent compared to the corresponding period last year. In real terms, GDP contracted by 3.3 percent.
The National Statistics Office said that lower tourist arrivals along with a downturn in global demand due to the international financial crisis were the cause of the decline in Malta’s economic activity during the period under review.
The Production Approach
The NSO said drops in value added were registered in electricity, gas and water supply; hotels and restaurants; fishing and the overall manufacturing sector. Drops were also registered in wholesale and retail trade; financial intermediation; transport, storage and communication; construction; and public administration. Growth in value added was registered in remote gaming activities; health; education; agriculture; real estate, renting and business activities.
The Expenditure Approach
The NSO said that at constant prices GDP declined by 3.3 per cent. Total final consumption expenditure in real terms declined by 0.8 per cent. Gross fixed capital formation at constant prices declined. Real exports and real imports also experienced drops.
The NSO said that a decline in GDP at current prices, amounting to €13.7 million, was estimated to have been caused by a €25.8 million rise in compensation of employees, a €45.3 million fall in gross operating surplus of enterprises, and a €5.7 million rise in net taxation on production and imports.

You can continue enjoying yourself in far away Canada while we decide what we do in Malta.
Don't bet on it that Gonzi and his government will last the remaining 4 years.

It's not that I believe the NOS figures but that I knew and Profs Scicluna had said during his campaign that we had been in recession since June last year and that the economy was and is still contracting and he has been proved right.
Why don't you ask Gonzi why he was saying that l-ekonomija fis-sod when he knew that we were already in recession?
Presenting a positive outlook will not and did prevent the negative aspect which Gonzi did so much to hide from surfacing.
As we say, IZ-ZEJT DEJJEM JITLA' F'WICC L-ILMA.

How many thousands are without work due to the recession? How many more hundreds would have found themselves without a job had the government not intervened? How many more would have been jobless had we not been EU members and within the eurozone? How many bank employees would have joined the unemployment line, and public's deposits jeopardized ? I guess we will never know because our government contrary to the LP's wrong advice, proceeded with a planned course of action which ensured stability. Ask Iceland the same question. No, ask Joseph who had advised the government there not to even consider joining the EU! But you obviously take his advice without opening your eyes and look around you, or do you still have an island mentality where the 'status quo' is some kind of achievement?.

If you need the bulbs so badly, go and buy them yourself. The MEP election, the results of which are not exactly what the NP had hoped for, will make no difference as to the location of Dr. Gonzi's office. Joseph will still have to contend with his at Hamrun. If this election makes you happy, then enjoy!

I suppose that either you have a short memory or else its tainted blue. Who said a few months back that Malta will not be hit by the economic turmoil and that we have such a strong footage that we can overcome this quite easily? Did you comment at the time when this statement was made, since you seem to be one that "knows how things go during and after a recession" to make these gov. aware of this?
Some people are becoming quite conversant in politics' tactics that they hardly see further then their nose and try to feed people nonsensical, twisted statements.

How cute, all of a sudden you believe the NSO's figures?!
@ Charles Sammut
The effects of the government's help to industry helps in the short term and the longer term. The game has just began and far from over yet. Just hold your horses, will you?
@ Edward Fenech
No shocking news at all. Anyone who knows how things go during and after a recession would have expected such numbers which, if you care to compare with other one time strong economies, the GDP contraction by 3.3% (for one particular Quarter) is quite modest.
ILO predicts that globally unemployment will INCREASE by 59 million. What's Malta's share going to be? Why do we always act as prima donnas always expecting, nay demanding, that we should be immune to the world's troubles?
There are political sectors which thrive on bad news as if this will achieve future successes. On the contrary, it breeds despair and attenuates one's self confidence and the chances of future successes.

Hey people, this is of little concern to our Gov. infact Dr. Gonzi recently stated that, its going to be business as usual after the EU elections. So it should come with no surprise when in the coming weeks and months, Gov. will not be able to come up with the slightest idea how to tackle this situation. Most probably Gov will replay: There is a crisis out there you know and we need to maintain jobs. Go figure!!!

As expected notwithstanding all attempts by ekonomija fis-sod Gonzi to hide the real situation.

I see that we have benefited from the global recession, just like Tonio Fenech told us we would. Game over.
