Briton accused of rape, infecting victim with HIV
A 41-year-old Briton this morning was charged in court with having raped a British woman at her residence in Gharghur, infecting her with HIV.
The incident allegedly happened early on Sunday morning.
Police Inspector Louise Calleja told the court that although the two had been drunk at the time, the incident could not be described as consensual, more so as the victim knew that the man was an HIV carrier.
It had since been confirmed, the inspector said, that the victim was now carrying HIV.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody.

I can't understand this crass ignorant logic that some persist to adopt. Mr Sansom, I happen to be of Jewish descent myself! Branding people needlessly for anything so trivial in not acceptable. And I never said we should tattoo anybody on the FOREHEAD! A standardised tattoo in the groin area or on the lower back would serve its purpose well enough. Technically speaking nobody should EVER have to see it!!
However, a healthy person has a greater RIGHT for LIFE than a terminally ill person has a right for sex!!! So Mr Lauri and Mr Sansom you're simply dishing rubbish from your comfy high chair. SEX over LIFE? Where are your priorities???
For those of you who claim to live on this Moral High Ground... I bet your selfish reasoning will VERY quickly VANISH when it WILL be your daughter who has contracted HiV or HEP-B from some partner who didn't have the DECENCY TO TELL HER all the truth! I personally happen to know of a few sad cases!
If I ever contract incurable deadly disease I will ASK to be tattooed MYSELF!

You got your facts wrong. There was a case a couple of years ago when two underage girls were infected by a Nigerian hovever they were not raped. If you were referring to rape and not HIV, as the vicious act you are wrong again.
In 2008, according to PQ 4454, of the 22 people arraigned in court last year on charges of rape, at least 6 were African. There were no other foreigners. That should be a cause for concern, considering that they form less than 5% of the population. Figures for 2007 are similar. I think it's fair comment to say that as a group they are committing more rapes than others because they are. . Trying to hide it would be discimination against other groups (Asians, Europeans etc) who behave properly.

One thing we agree is that the perpetrators should be punished according to their crime, not according to skin colour.

Quote "This again reaffirms my case that all HiV carriers should be legally obliged to carry a tatoo or electronic tag describing their compromised condition."
What century are you in?
Yes this was a horrible crime, however should all people with conditions that can spread have tattoos on them? Hitler tatooed Jews in WWII. I also agree with that you cannot find out if you are HIV infected within 2 days. See: http://www.avert.org/testing.htm

The comments coming from the majority of you are shameful. They stink of discrimination, stigma and sheer ignorance. Person LIVING with the HIV virus are NOT sexual predators as you all seem to think !
I have several friends who are HIV + a couple of whom have been positive for more than 15 years and are certainly NOT predators or even a remote threat to society. They are all living in loving, stable, happy relationships with their partners who are NOT HIV + !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr Tortell Pisani - you of all people shock me with you sheer bigoted and extreme views being a member of the medical profession, your suggestions for tattoos or otheriwse to stigmatize people living HIV with stinks of IGNORANCE and DISCRIMINATION. What next ? tattoo people living with Hep A / B, TB and other diseases spread by various forms of physical contact ?
I am truly sickened by the mass ignorance of people !! You all need to take some good lessons about sexual health etc
P.S. Living with HIV is NOT murder in a slow torturous process, as LGalea seems to naively think it is !

@ Chrissey Galea
You both have made a good point.
As I once read in a medical journal, the prescence of HIV virus may be 100% confirmed only after approximately 6 months ( considered as incubation period ) after the presumed date of infection.

This man should be isolated for the next 6 years so as not to infect others.

I'm glad no one is making any sweeping statements against Britons coming to Malta. As the illegal action of one Briton does not reflect the actions of all British.
The same criteria should be followed whenever a coloured person some illegal act. And btw, no colored person has done such a vicious act.
Illegality has to be punished for what it is, irrespective of the skin colour of it perpetrator

Dr. Pisani Is so right. Persons with HIV knows they have the deadly disease and should be responsible for their actions. They should have to register with the authorities like any other sexual predator and should be prosecuted if they do infect someone with the virus.

In this case the victim knew about the man's HiV infection...
Unfortunately, the same crime is perpetrated countless times (even in Malta) in cases where the victim not so wise and might unwittingly accept the deadly sexual act.
This again reaffirms my case that all HiV carriers should be legally obliged to carry a tatoo or electronic tag describing their compromised condition. Another (less effective) way is to render all sexual relations illegal for people carrying HiV or other life threatening, incurable, sexually transmissible disease.
Bluntly speaking, anyone who disagrees with such measures is necessarily in favour of murder!
It is a crime to infect others with deadly disease without their fully informed consent!

How does anybody know the victim is carrying HIV. Testing normally takes 3months to complete the incident happened on Sunday morning !!!!

Is it possible the HIV test results are ready so soon - since two days ago?

Are the courts going to treat this in the same way they've treated the sex offences of a notorious figure of a different nationality ? That guy is still enjoying his freedom!

This was clearly an attempted murder case as he condemned his victim to an almost certain slow death and he should be charged as so.

Hmmm.... strange, this. She knew he was a carrier, and she was drunk with him .... 'very early in the morning'. Playing with fire!
