Mellieha was recently named a European destination of excellence through a project co-financed by the European Commission.
The aim of the initiative is to promote lesser known, non-traditional destinations which have worked to develop the social, cultural and environmental potential of their areas in a sustainable way.
Judges were particularly impressed by the village's rural aspect and history as well as the pleasant scenery offered by places such as Selmun and Manikata. As a result of the award, all Mellieha hotels may now display the EDEN award emblem, mayor Robert Cutajar said.
The Mellieha council plans to invest in heritage trails in the coming years, which it hopes will add to its beauty and complement existing places of interest, such as the war shelters and the Red Tower. The EDEN award is held in 22 European states. It highlights the value, diversity and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations, and promotes destinations where the economic growth objective is pursued in such a way as to ensure the social, cultural and environmental sustainability of tourism.
The awards ceremony will be held later this year.
