Updated: Busuttil leading in vote sorting
Dr Simon Busuttil
Simon Busuttil is, as expected, leading the candidates who contested yesterday's elections to the European Parliament. A cursory look at the candidates' pigeon holes, 35 minutes after the sorting of votes started at Naxxar counting centre shows Dr Busuttil's filling up quickly.
PN candidates David Casa and Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas are also doing well.
The situation is tighter among the Labour candidates, with the contest appearing to be between Louis Grech, Edward Scicluna, Marlene Mizzi, Joseph Cuschieri and John Attard Montalto.
One of the Labour candidates, Claudette Abela Baldacchino, cautioned, however, that the election would not be won solely by the No 1 votes but also by the other preferences.
Dr Busuttil in 2004 was the first candidate to be elected, winning 58,899 first count votes.
Support for Alternattiva Demokratika appears to have fallen steeply from the 9.33 percent won by the party in 2004.
Azzjonali Nazzjonali is also recording a poor performance.
Insiders in the major parties say that the PL is expected to retain its three EP seats to the PN's two, but the PN may win the extra seat allocated to Malta under the Lisbon Treaty, restoring parity at 3-3, although that is far from being a certainty.

Well Done Simon, you deserve such a fantastic result. Keep up the good work in EU,
The results show that the Majority of Maltese are backing you, dear Simon. Well done, a result you so deserve.

Congratz... Simon....better having serious people in EU than people that dont even know how to tackle a right decision for the country and intentionally press the wrong button.

@John Zammit: Whether you are right or wrong, this attitude will not win you more voters.

Dr Zammit:
I'm afraid, this best method for this country is 'tanto peggio, tanto megolio'. Let Malta hit rock bottom and...MAYBE...one day it will learn!!! We are a nation destined to destruction...

The Alleanza Liberali - www.freewebs.com/liberalalliance - told you not to do the same mistake. But the Maltese decided to waste nother five years and do the same mistake by electing only MEPs from the LPN only, now enjoy it!!!???

Its amazing how the rules of the electoral games are always crafted to allow some loopholes to circunvent the peoples will!
Whichever party wins the absolute majority of popular vote should have the proportional number of MEPs to represent the country. They could be decided upon internally by choosing who inside the party who garnered the highest number of votes! It would be then up to the parties to deternime how many and who should be fielded as candidates!
If the PN looses this and any forthcoming electoral rendez-vous, it is also a case of self inflicted defeat with many faithful and loyal disciples feeling betrayed and being hard hurt by the same organisation that they often unconditionally support. Global economic crisis or not, "opinions matters but votes count"!

'restoring parity at 3-3'......and this is called democracy even if there is a 15,000 vote difference?

What a tragedy! Always the same 2 parties, always the same faces, always the same boredom! No wonder the country is in the critical situation it is in!
