Not a World Heritage Site

I refer to the article 'Gateway to ancient wonders' (The Sunday Times, May 24) in which it is stated that the city of Mardin in Turkey is a World Heritage Site. The Unesco World Heritage List is unfortunately very misused by some countries. Mardin is not on the list.

It was nominated but not approved. I remember the discussion we had in the World Heritage Panel about this city, which is undoubtedly exceptional, but did not make it to the list due to various shortcomings in the way it is managed and its state of conservation.
