Malta's women's basketball team has been assured of a gold medal in the Small Nations Games in Cayprus after rivals Luxembourg lost this afternoon.

The women's basketball national team are sure of winning the gold medal despite not being in action today. Santino Coppa's girls notched their second successive win yesterday when they edged Cyprus 53-48 and needed a win against Luxembourg tomorrow to seal first place.

However, Luxembourg's 80-55 defeat to Iceland meant that Maltese team cannot be overtaken at the top of the round-robin competition.

This is Malta's second gold medal in women's basketball after their triumph in the 2003 GSSE.

Malta's only other gold in the games so far was that won by shooter William Checuti on Monday.
