Change can lead to country's success - Muscat
A coalition of people with different ideas and beliefs could bring about a change that would eventually lead to the country's success, Labour leader Joseph Muscat said yesterday.
That change, however, could only be achieved if people voted for Labour candidates in the European Parliament and local council elections on Saturday, he said.
The coalition, on the other hand was made up of Labourites and those who were first-time voters, Dr Muscat said. These people must be welcomed and not pushed aside, he added.
He wanted to send out a message of hope that something new had started for workers, the self-employed, small businesses, pensioners and families.
Before a large crowd during a political activity in Fgura, Dr Muscat made one final appeal for everyone to cast their vote on Saturday.
He spoke about the values that drew him to the Labour Party that, among other things, created new opportunities for the middle class and fought for people's rights.
Referring to dockyard workers, Dr Muscat read out excerpts from a letter Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had sent to dockyard workers last year. In the letter, Dr Muscat said, workers were promised that the government would do its utmost to help the dockyard move forward.
"You'll move ahead by working more, earning more and paying less tax," he read out to the applause of the crowd.
Similarly, he said, the government had sent an email to Go employees saying there were no plans for downsizing. "However, the employees told me that unless 350 leave, then they will be fired," Dr Muscat said referring to his meeting with Go employees earlier yesterday.
Calling out taxi drivers, bus drivers, Go and Enemalta employees and all those who felt change was needed, Dr Muscat urged them to vote for the Labour Party.
Addressing those who had not collected their vote or who were still unsure whether they should do so, Dr Muscat asked them to take a closer look at their water and electricity bills and send out a clear message to the government with their vote.

This is very rich, nay cute, coming from the leader of the Labour Party!
Where was his party when Malta was negotiating the terms of accession to the EU ? They were too busy with the No EU 4 U campaign.
Where is his party on pension reform?
There are so many issues on which the LP either purposely abstains from or perhaps it realizes that it is unable to provide useful input.
A change will come about, and not soon enough, after the next general election when once more the LP will be looking for a mature, sensible leader.
They may have to seek someone from outside the party since finding the right man/woman from within has, for the last few decades, been as elusive as trying to find a needle in a haystack.
But there, I almost forgot about the two Deputy leaders!

Eddie Fenech Adami and Gonzi have not only already pushed Malta off the cliff, but then continues pushing it to the bottom of the sea.

There certainly will be a change of people decide they want to cast a vote in favour of the labour party candidates and that change will be detrimental to Malta's future - imagine having to cope with a war on two fronts - the opposition stamping its little feet in Malta and a bunch of euro sceptics or euro passengers who are bent on casting gloom and doom from Brussels..imagine the impact on investment, jobs and the quality of life. On the other hand, I would much rather trust our island state to a person who has a track record of real success, who is more credible and who certainly has commitment for the EU and for opportunities there are. "Direzzjoni Success" can mean one thing.....a successful direction off the edge of a cliff!!!! He or she that has ears and eyes to judge let him judge by actions not smart words and sarcastic smiles!!!
