An estate agent was this morning given a suspended jail term after he was found guilty of seriously injuring a client back in 2004.

Warren Azzopardi, 39, was given a nine-month jail term suspended to three years after Magistrate Lawrence Quintano found him guilty of causing grievous injuries to Joe Borg.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia testified that the accused had told the police on the scene of the crime that he had some problems with Mr Borg.

He had said that Mr Borg entered his office and made as if to attack him. He only tried to defend himself.

Mr Borg, Mr Azzopardi said, had bought property in Birkirkara and was angry that permits were taking a very long time to be issued. He had called the accused, offended and threatened him.

Mr Borg had said Mr Azzopardi punched him when he visited the office. He fainted and fell. He explained that as the accused moved close to him, he pushed him away with his head. He said the Mr Azzopardi continued to kick him while he was down and broke his nose, cracked his teeth, bruised him in the head and gave him two black eyes.
