Collisions cause traffic nightmare in the north
Motorists travelling to and from the north of Malta were facing nightmare traffic yesterday evening with two roads to the area blocked by collisions.
The trouble started at about 8 p.m. with a five-car collision on the Xemxija Road, near Mistra. At least two persons were injured and had to be hospitalised, but their condition was not thought to be serious.
As the road was closed, traffic was diverted to Miżieb, where a collision along the narrow, winding road reduced traffic to a crawl.
Many motorists were travelling through Manikata as an alternative.

I think its about time that Traffic Wardens who carry out duties concerning collisions should use motor cycles instead of cars; thus facilitating their arrival at points of collision. The same idea should apply to paramedics; I hate to imagine a major disaster with ambulances held up in heavy traffic.

We were caught up in this traffic and luckily decided to take the Manikata route to Mellieha, knowing that the roads are slightly wider then the alternaitve. I would have thought it would have made sense to make the route down from Mellieha to Miżieb one way and then have all traffic to Mellieha via Manikata one way. Simply placing a policeman at each point would have saved alot of heartache and the second accident on the road to Miżieb. Hey but what do I know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A major accident is waiting to happen here and it is a wonder that this time there were no fatalities. The main Mellieha road is not equipped for all the traffic that goes on it especially at weekends. On top of that neither is it equipped for all the heavy vehicles that go on it to the various building projects in Mellieha or for delivery of goods in Gozo. It is about time, especially at very busy times that this road was made one way with the Manikata road or Mizieb road taking the other way. All this is happening before the proposed building of the 16 floor project at Mistra !!!!!! What would happen then? I won't even go there.
Recently, maybe because of the local roadworks we've had here, I noticed a massive deterioration in the standard of driving in Malta, and this is before the heat starts raging and too much blood goes to the head. It is not only young ones who are bad road users - there is complete ignorance and apathy even in the fact that hardly anybody indicates where they are going not to mention the unnecessary overtaking. ADT please note.
