AN blames PN, PL for escalation of illegal migration problem
Both major political parties were to blame for letting the problem of illegal immigration escalate, Azzjoni Nazzjonali leader Josie Muscat said.
He told a news conference this morning that Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi recently admitted that there was a consensus between the two parties not to bring the subject of illegal immigration to the surface but discussed the issue in private meetings.
Dr Muscat insisted that ever since his party was set up two-and-a-half years ago it had been raising the threats posed by illegal immigrants – including those who arrived in Malta by boat and any immigrants who entered without or overstayed their visa. Since then the numbers had increased and the immigrants posed a treat to Malta’s cultural and religious values, he said.
He said that the PL and the PN had turned the election campaign into a political football and people needed to understand that on June 6 they would be voting as a whole country.

I hear you, but my point is this:
If you ask Dr. Mscat and 99% of the commentators what is the problem? All would say one answer: it’s the illegal immigrant’s not legal immigrants. Okay fair enough.
But how would understand it when Dr. Muscat says ‘the immigrants posed a treat to Malta’s cultural and religious values,’..? Here one should stop and ask, does the legal status of peoples has any thing to do with the hosting country’s religion or culture? Is it just a scaremongering campaign? Or Dr. Muscat simply suggesting closing Malta’s borders? If this is the case, then I would ask Minister Gatt to stop the smart city’ peoples to come to Malta since this investment is coming from peoples from different culture and different religion.
Last election I voted for Dr. Muscat as I was firm believe in all the issues his party handles (including abuse of single mother..Etc) but when I hear Dr. Muscat only talks harshly about (vote-less) immigrants and sideline others issues I lose faith of what the AN says.

Again, we have a pseudo party commenting on the only issue they care about. I can imagine the rush of belonging to a far right "party" but is it worth it all this to get not more than 5,000 votes put together?

Keep burying your head in the sand Mercieca.
Others are not doing so and see the problem as it really is.

@ Josie Muscat
For year after year, both major parties acquiesced on this issue so critical to the Maltese people both on Malta and abroad. Only AN and CNI showed genuine leadership and common sense. From the start, they spoke out against the illegal trafficking of people to Malta, and against the government's lack of resolve in returning stowaways (deceitfully called "migrants") on illegal boats to point of origin in accordance with maritime law.

@ M. Mercieca,
Racism is NOT the issue.
A tiny densely populated nation illegally swamped against its will by numerous people of any race, religion, skin colour or culture is a great danger to the future survival of that nation.
Which part don't you understand?

What religion and culture got to do with racism based issue?
'Since then the numbers had increased and the immigrants posed a treat to Malta’s cultural and religious values, he said.'
Aren’t northern Italians against their brothers in the south of Italy that share same culture, same religions, and same values?
Aren’t the English against the Poles? Aren’t the old members bullying smaller members? Aren’t westerners cautious against Easterners?
Racism is the main issue and its cancer and Dr. Muscat knows how cancer should be treated.

I agree with what the AN leader said. It is a fact that illegal migration has only become an important issue for NP and LP just recently. In other words just before the EP elections. But the majority of the Maltese people have been expressing their concerns for quite a long time now. They were only made to keep their mouth shut as if it was a taboo to talk about the endless number of boats landing on our shores.
I just hope that the Maltese will use their vote to give substance to their concerns.

Gonzi, you have been too complacent to the illegal immigrants' invasion as you yourself has called it. You shall get your answer on June 6 with the PL landslide victory.

Don't you worry Dr Muscat, we know who to really trust if we want to see proper action taken regarding this problem.

The Maltese need to send a message this coming election. Punish the current government by not voting GonziPN.

AN you are correct.
It is only after the other political parties saw that the Campaign for National Independence CNI www.cnimalta.org had collected thousands of signatures for Parliament to stop the invasion of illegal immigrants http://www.cnimalta.org/ilE.html that they started talking about it.

I very much concur with you Dr Muscat. The PNPL duopoly, as Edward Scicluna once put it, colluded together to remain mum on this serious problem going as far as suppressing popular street manifestations through party directives. It is only during the last two months in the run up to the MEP elections that both parties came out in the open on illegal immigration when the absolute majority of maltese citizens expressed their profound concern relating to the africanization of Malta.
