Knights of St John silos open to public

Three silos, dating back to the Knights of the Order of St John, were opened to the public by Wirt Għawdex during Notte Gozitana at the Citadel in Victoria. The silos (approximately 10 metres deep) were originally built for storing grain, but they were converted into a water reservoir in 1877.

Wirt Għawdex recently signed a heritage-management agreement with the Water Services Corporation for the management, preservation and conservation of the silos.

Entrance to the silos is through the Gunpowder Magazine at the Citadel, which is another site managed by the society. After full restoration is completed, the society intends to open the silos on a regular basis.
