A fifth of the 1,070 voters who can cast their vote today for Saturday's EP election have already voted.

Voting, which started at 7 a.m. and continues until 10 p.m., is taking place at the former Trade Fair Grounds in Naxxar. Some 400 of the voters are also eligible to vote for the local elections. There are 13 ballot boxes for the EP elections and 23 for the local ones.

The voters include athletes who would be representing Malta in the Small Nations Games of the Small States of Europe in Cyprus.

The Electoral Law was amended to allow early voting a few weeks ago following a call by the Maltese Olympic Committee.

Once the voting is over, the boxes will be sealed by the Electoral Commission and put away in a strong room at the Naxxar office to be opened only when the counting starts on Sunday next week.
