Cabin crew taking industrial action
Cabin crew have been ordered by their union to work to rule as from Monday after talks between the union and Air Malta, which had been going on for one year and nine months, came to a standstill.
The union said the current collective agreement expired in March 2003.
“The cabin crew are willing to be more productive and flexible to the benefit of both parties,” they said.
The union said it exhausted all other measures at its disposal before ordering this action.

The situation has been going on for years now, way before the recession, so this action is well & truly justified. Cabin crew have indeed rolled up their sleeves many times before this, Mr Mifsud, & they gave up a lot but the collective agreement issue still went on for years!!!
There comes a point when you have to stand up to be heard - i'm sure you would do the same for better working conditions...& most people don't even wait 6 whole years to do something!!!
"He who is without sin shall cast the first stone" - maybe we should all make this our motto & stop criticising other people especially when you know they are in the right!!!

Did you ever make a claim with your employers for better wages and working conditions busuttil? You talk like MISERS because you are surely not AirMalta employees. This is apart from showing your hatred for workers be they at AirMalta or the Shipyards.

@Sara Galea,
If the Airline is subsidised from my taxes I mind my business. If this will be the result due to industrial action i would say shut it down.

Well but if the collective agreement expired in March 2003 (6 years ago) it's more than justified that unions and workers make their voice heard

If anyone doesn't know how Trade Union works, please don't try to express yourself in a political stuff,or maybe you are a manager that benefits from high salary, let all Trade Unions decide what should be fair for the members and if you are still an employee let someone be helpful for you and don't let politicians brainwash you, that's why we maltese don't move on because if something is not mine so we aren't interested or make it worst.......mr.mifsud

well done to the cabin crew. it is unbelievable that people criticise when action is taken to safeguard workers rights and conditions. roll up our sleeves mr mifsud? what should they do? take a pay cut because AirMalta is too stingy to pay a wage increase after ten years?ten years mr mifsud? the current situation has been going on for ten years! some credit crunch! and if they end up jobless at least they would be jobless but with their pride and dignity intact. maybe we should go back to the middle ages and exploit workers again. just until the credit crunch is over!

They're all trying their luck before the election. Who's next?

Yes yes....the workers should grin and bear it....accept broken promises, management not respecting signed agreements, discrimination etc etc. That is surely the way forward for a country who's constitution is based on workers.... Ps...Regarding this issue, one should have gone to the trouble of reading the whole article....Collective agreement expired in 2003....way before the current financial situation.....

Cabin Crew and many AirMalta emplyees have been having it good for many years. The only reason they probably still have a job because AirMalta is subsidised by the government. I hope the country does not repeat the Dry Docks mistake and take 20 years to take decisive action. Priviatize and down today before tomorrow and before the unions squeeze every pound shilling and cent from us tax payers

@all The union said the current collective agreement expired in March 2003. this is no joke. over 6 years without improving working conditions and you expect them to pull up their sleeves through the current situation? Mr mifsud are you suggesting that requesting better working conditions and wage increses is bla bla bla?

Considering the current Financial situation around the globe, the actions being taken by some unions especially when it comes to the tourist industry is totally disgraceful. I have always been proud of our national airlines but if they start destroying their own future then there will be no tears shed if the company goes under, and that is not a very difficult point to reach these days. Unions should be urging the employees to do their best to get this country through the financial turmoil and not get everyone uprising against the government. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. I just hope that I am wrong.

Dear Mr.Busuttil and Mifsud I think if you had a wage freeze for more than 4 years and no collective agreement for more than 1 year 9 months you would do the same so please mind your business.

well said Mr. Busuttil, people are trying each and every possible means to try to destroy our country and our industries. what we should do is to pull up our sleeves and do that extra effort so that we will make it through the current situation. it seems that lately there is a fashion of work to rule, requesting wage increases and bla bla bla. when then they end up jobless they say it wasn't our fault. some people wish to have a job which is secure but others seem not to be interested to save guard their jobs.

Dear cabin crew and all Airmalta staff have a look around you and also read about the airline business ( British airways in particular) than start acting. Good luck you might need it in the future.
