The Berlaymont building hosting the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels was evacuated this morning - the second time in 10 days.

Although no official reason was given, sources told timesofmalta.com that it may be due to a serious water leak on the top floor of the building.

Fire forced an evacuation of the building 10 days ago.

There are indications as yet that today's evacuation was connected with work in the wake of a fire in the Berlaymont building on 18 May. Commission officials were allowed to return to the building only this Monday. Two fire engines are currently on the scene.

The order to leave the building was made in the middle of a press conference attended by the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and two European commissioners.

All Maltese working at the building have already moved out.
