Mepa moves in at film studios

'Operation did not disrupt ongoing productions'

A metal structure built illegally on a buffer zone at the Mediterranean Film Studios near Kalkara was yesterday removed by the planning authority.

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority said the structure, an extension to a canteen and warehouse, and its canopy were built next to the world's first mechanical fort.

Mepa chairman Austin Walker said: "While the authority supports the initiatives and efforts the filming industry takes to remain competitive in the international market, we cannot tolerate that illegal and insensitive development takes place, especially on the doorstep of a historical site that daily attracts numerous visitors".

In March, the studio manager was asked to submit a planning application to sanction the structure but it was never received by the authority.

Mepa said it was taking all the necessary steps to ensure the operation did not disrupt any ongoing productions at the studios.
