First of 80 free wi-fi spots launched
The first of 80 wi-fi spots in public places was inaugurated this morning by Communications Minister Austin Gatt at the Old Railway Station Garden in Birkirkara. Another two wi-fi spots were simultaneously switched on at Independence Gardens in Sliema and the area around St Aloysius College in Birkirkara.
Dr Gatt said this was an initiative to encourage greater use of the internet, which currently has a penetration rate of 63 percent. He said the next wi-fi spot would be the area around the higher secondary school in Naxxar. Many of the other spots would also be around schools. The internet content is filtered to be safe for children.
All 80 wi-fi spots will be in use by the end of the year.
During this morning's event, Philip Micallef, chairman of the Malta Communications Authority, presented 10 laptop computers to Birkirkara local council.

Joe Fenech Oh I see, so thats what you would tell your children...too much work...can't handle it...change the course. DEmanding course and future job...just change it...no big deal. Throw all that hard work and learning away. And you have the nerve to call me spoilt. How dare you... For your information I can't attach my laptop to my mobile...because my mobile isn't that advanced simply because I can't afford one...and I dont have mummy and daddy paying for me like you seem to think every student has. And you asked how will I handle a job and kids...how is that relevant to this conversation. Besides the fact that it will not happen for many many years...it isn't any of YOUR business or concern. I fully agree with Joss Galea ...you are nothing but a pessimistic person who will try to find fault with every good thing that actually happens in this country. As a person in the IT industry, trying to learn something that is not even taught in Malta...this "gimmick" is overdue.

Honestly Mr. Fenech you really need to get off of the computer and take off whatever glasses you wear. This type of service is offered the world over. In fact many restaurants offer WiFi as a bonus just to attract clientèle who need to browse during their break! In fact businesspeople and students alike tend to meet up at WiFi enabled hotspots to collaborate on projects. WiFi is not going to present an obstacle in a garden - just an added attraction much on the same lines as a fountain or statue. Why try to belittle something that is obviously good for the citizen?

I do not know why all this fuss on free WIFI spots ?! Our LP club @ Paola has its own free WIFI spot since a year and a half ago ! It costs us almost nothing , only a good Wifi router connected to our internet provider
If wifi users in our LP Paola area wants to benefit , just type in "bcoolblabour" as login and password .
Thank you

Great Idea instead of going out to read a book we go out and take the laptop instead. Well Done.

Say I've been stuck at home working for days on important assignments, reasearching, coding etc. Spending all this time inside surely isn't doing me any good, so its time for me to get out of the house. But I can't....I can't stop working...as the deadline is getting closer and closer...and a break right now would mean a huge setback in my work...resulting in even more stress to be able to finish this assignment on time. I feel its time to get out of the house and go do some work outside...with this free wi-fi available.
Where in your 'professional' opinion would you recommend there be wi-fi available? And please don't say a library or a cafe...because in that case I might as well just stay home.

to all those moany foany people who are always grambiling about everything:
1. if you dont like it to have a wifi in a park, tough luck, don't go and don't use.
2. if u are scared that your child will be beaten in a park for taking a laptop, just dont let her take it with her, plus she can still take her laptop with her to the park wiith or without the wifi.
3. if u think that only laptops can use wifi, you are wrong, because todays mobiles have internet and so they can handle wifi. ie. wifi is not just for laptops
4. no wifi in higher secondary? that school is for 16+ students and there is nothing wrong for setting up a wifi there. i wish we had a wifi at the time in 2004 when i was at higher secondary coz it would have helped me alot during my free lessons to get my research done rather than doing it at home.. and no, the computer rooms were not available since they were used for all computer subjects

@ Larissa
Do not take these comments personally. It's useless feeling hurt when this is freedom of speech...I am sorry but yes I agree that WIFI in the Higher secondary school is not as useful as educational materials such as books/texts which are missing in our schools. So Larissa, as a graduated, mature woman I tell you yes read these comments, some are funny, other are wicked but whatever people say it's an opinion.
As regards wifi in a public place, I am sorry but I have no intention to walk 15 min for the park to find that it's full of children playing and who might accidentally fall on me breaking my laptop and what about the rain and the sun too...As if...Whilst it's a nice idea, I ask the governement why he didnt consider WIFI spots in some streets where more people can gain access + why should my 13 year old daughter take her laptop out to the park with the risk of someone beating her up and nicking it? I am a working mother so I have no time to visit the park with her...Therefore better at home with me 'safe'.

However, this doesn't mean that I need any of them when I go to a park or garden! The Maltese are just an inactive nation, who lead one of the most unhealthy lifestyles in the EU and who's life centres round TV, sitting down on benches, lazing about, and engaging on useless activities on the computer (chatting, unfocused surfing, etc).
Oh, but I forgot: most Maltese people are top bankers and businessmen and need WiFi all day to know what's happening in Wall Street and in the City!

When something is free it is always good. However I see this action from the minister as insensitive towards the plight of the maltese people. Couldn't the setup, running and propaganda costs in such a project be saved and channeled towards something more beneficial to the maltese people? like for example reducing electricity, water or fuel prices?
Why would we invest in such projects when our economy is on the verge of collapse? so that tourists, non-tax payers, spammers or hackers can use these undeserved services? one shall keep in mind that running, servicing, managing and securing such sensitive technology devices do not come cheap.

Speak for yourself! Certainly, neither me nor my fellow collegues fall in this category as we're constantly on the go and doing ranges of activitites without even touching a computer. Ironically enough, if you had to rate students on attractiveness and fitness levels you will find that they are topping the list!
Again, we need these Wi Fi Connections. It seems that Mr J Fenech is one of these people with gadgets who don't even have a clue how to make use of half of the functionalities at hand and who think that they are know alls in IT subjects. Well, keep that attitude to yourself.

What does a child need a laptop for anyway?? A standard home PC is enough for a child's requirements!
Sticking to the matter at hand, it's about time that internet is distributed free of charge in our public areas, lots of people would need a break from work and stay in a garden with free internet to surf, or communicate with their loved ones abroad......most companies do not allow internet browsing while at work.
So please, stop the nagging.

@ Joe Fenech: I don't see why it's so hard to comprehend. Why shouldn't we have internet access from a garden. I love the outdoors and try to get out as often as possible. I hate being stuck in an office. At least this way I can get out for some time and continue working while not being stuck within four walls.
And another thing. Have you never accessed the internet from parks and gardens when abroad? I've done so for quite some time now.
What's wrong with having internet access from gardens? Why should I be deprived of the luxury of working in pleasant surroundings just because some children obese are too lazy to run around and burn some pent-up energy?

I agree with you Adrian Borg, although this is a very good step towards a wi-fi country, I guess wi-fi for now is required in better places.
Most of the kids get stuck infront their computers at home... now guess what... they will be going in gardens and playgrounds and instead of practicing sport they will be using internet at all times. Apart from that why would one need wi-fi in schools if students do not have permission to have laptops and mobiles with them? (which is a rule I agree with)

One had to smuggle a computer game at the time let alone a computer. Marxist ideas: the machine helps the capitalist to exploit the worker. 25 years down the line and some still persist on such theories. Hahaha.
Just imagine if we kept the same ideology to rule the country, no call centres, no ISP's, no Cable TV companies, no Mobile phone companies, Just avieries full of pigeons to send our SMSs. And all this in 25 years. Man how fast times change!! with the right ideas in place.

I'm aware that Estonia is all covered by free public Wi-fi, thats an area about 45,000 Kilometers Square, in fact it has earned the nickname E-stonia & is a stonghold in the IT industry as a result. Malta is one of the few other countries who has all the neccesary to achieve the same & even compete & complement our European counterpart. So Mr.Gatt I do thank you for spearheading such an ambitious project & I hope someday all the country is covered. There are many way to achieve this while keeping local ISP's viable e.g bandwidth speed & limit, a reasonable level of filtering of the public wi-fi system etc. & after all this is a liberalised market.
