To say that I was shocked at the story published by The Times about WasteServ storing glass in the countryside at Wied Fulija is an understatement. Trying to justify this disgrace makes it even worse. And this following a commendable recent campaign by the government to remove "eyesores" from the countryside!
It is already bad enough when uneducated people leave rubbish in the countryside but for the government's waste management company to dump glass in the countryside for storage purposes is simply unbelievable. Is it possible that WasteServ cannot come up with a more acceptable storage option? It has been said that this is temporary until the volumes are enough for export. But what goes on after that? Glass waste will keep on being generated even after this lot is exported.
I have been taking all suitable waste for recycling ever since bring-in sites were first established. However, as from today, although I will keep on separating other waste for recycling, I will no longer be taking any glass to the bring-in sites. I do not want my rubbish to end up dumped in the countryside and will not be an accomplice in this disgrace.
And, by the way, I also used up water to wash the glass (or better wasted water as it turned out to be) and propped up my water bills in the process because we have always been told that glass should be cleaned before being disposed of for eventual recycling. I'm sure that after enjoying our countryside for weeks on end, the glass will be anything but clean. I will, of course, resume separating glass for recycling if WasteServ come up with something better. To do better than this should not be that difficult.
