Zenga: Catania coach Walter Zenga announced his resignation following his mid-table side's 3-1 Serie A victory at home to Napoli yesterday. "With this game I am closing my time with Catania," the former Italy goalkeeper said. "I'm without a team next year, but I'm not worried." Outspoken Zenga, a former Steaua Bucharest coach, has clashed with the Sicilian club's board.

Scunthorpe: Winger Martyn Woolford capped a superb display with a late winner as Scunthorpe came from behind to beat Millwall 3-2 in the League One play-off final at Wembley yesterday. Matt Sparrow put Scunthorpe ahead before two goals by Millwall's Gary Alexander put Kenny Jackett's men in pole position for a return to the Championship. But Woolford then created a second for Sparrow before scoring the winner with five minutes left.

Mainz: Mainz 05 became the second team to win promotion to the Bundesliga yesterday after beating Oberhausen 4-0 to finish second on 63 points. Freiburg have already secured promotion with top spot while third-placed Nurnberg, who beat 1860 Munich 2-1, face a promotion play-off against Energie Cottbus, third from bottom in the Bundesliga.

Enke: Goalkeeper Robert Enke declared himself fit for Germany's tour of China and the United Arab Emirates despite suffering a head injury for his club Hanover at the weekend. The 31-year-old had to be substituted in his side's 2-2 draw at Bielefeld on Saturday. The Germany squad will fly to China tomorrow and play the national team in Shanghai on May 29 before travelling to Dubai to face the UAE on June 2.

Gary Neville: England coach Fabio Capello surprisingly named Manchester United's veteran defender Gary Neville in his 24-man squad yesterday for World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra. The 34-year-old Neville, United's club captain, made the last of his 85 England appearances against Spain in 2007.

Nice: Nice have chosen Didier to replace Frederic Antonetti as manager for next season. "We have decided to choose Didier Olle-Nicole, who is still young in the job," Nice president Maurice Cohen said. Olle-Nicole, 47, is currently coaching Ligue 2 side Clermont.

Rallying: Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala won the Rally of Italy yesterday after his Ford bosses decided against ordering him to let team-mate Mikko Hirvonen take maximum points. A win for Hirvonen in Sardinia could have made a bigger dent in championship leader Sebastien Loeb's advantage but Latvala was allowed to seal the second victory of his career. Loeb finished third behind Hirvonen having won the previous five rallies this season.

Marathon: Zimbabwe's Stephen Muzhingi won the gruelling 89km Comrades Marathon between Pietermaritzburg and Durban yesterday. In an annual race normally dominated by Russian runners and this year attracting a field of 13,000, Muzhingi crossed the finish line in 5hr 23min 27sec.

Sailing: Ericsson 4 tightened its grip on the Volvo Ocean Race yesterday, reaching Galway in Ireland ahead of the field after a gruelling transatlantic crossing from Boston. Victory in the seventh stage of the round-the-world challenge, one of yachting's most prestigious events, gives the Swedish entry clear breathing space with only three legs to go. Ericsson 4 completed the 4,100km course in seven days, seven hours and 33 minutes, just over an hour ahead of its nearest rival, Puma Ocean Racing.

Basket, NBA: Kobe Bryant scored 41 points, including a key late three-pointer, to lift the Los Angeles Lakers to a 103-97 win over the Denver Nuggets and a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference finals series. Bryant's big shot with just over a minute left put the Lakers ahead for good at 96-95 and he sealed the victory by making five of six free-throws.

Davis Cup: India, shocked by the ITF's decision not to suspend Australia for forfeiting their Davis Cup tie with India on security grounds, said it would raise the issue with world tennis's governing body. Australia was fined $10,000 for forfeiting the zonal tie in Chennai but the ITF's Davis Cup Committee decided against banning the 28-times champions from the 2010 competition or relegating them from Asia/Oceania Zone Group I.
