The British woman who found herself in difficulties while diving in Ċirkewwa on Thursday died 24 hours later in hospital.
The woman, who was here on holiday, was taken to hospital after she fell sick during a dive. She died late on Friday, the police said yesterday.
The police said an autopsy revealed that the woman died of severe brain injury secondary to decompression, which is when divers either descend or surface too fast, forming nitrogen bubbles in the blood.
Sources said the woman, 53, was part of a group of 10 divers, including an instructor who noticed her son carrying her to the surface.
She was then taken ashore and complained she was having trouble breathing before she stopped breathing altogether and soon after lost consciousness. Her family called an ambulance and tried resuscitating her until it arrived.
