Inquiry into match-fixing case
Standing committee urges swift conclusion
The Division One Standing Committee yesterday urged the Malta FA to conclude its inquiry into a match-fixing case as quickly as possible.
The committee was referring to the first round match between St George's and Vittoriosa which was played in December. The latter won 3-2 but only days later, two St George's players, Andrea Gatt and Lawrence Mizzi, admitted in court that they had accepted bribes.
Vittoriosa Stars FC vice-president Manwel Ancillieri is currently facing court proceedings in connection with the same case. The MFA subsequently ordered a replay after upholding a protest by St George's. The Stars won it 2-1.
In a statement, signed by secretary Bjorn Vassallo, the Division One Standing Committee argued that the pending inquiry into this case could affect the outcome of the promotion and relegation issues in the league.
After five months of investigation, the committee feels that it's time the MFA Board concluded its inquiry.
