its a great picture...........many people go to hongkong just to watch the tall buildings on the waterfront...... pity that Malta never built high buildings.than there would have been more space for u and our children..... so many people living in HONGKONG and yet its much GREENER than Malta..more open spaces...yes thay did not cry just because they had a portomaso tower......no now its the main attraction high buildings...

C Cilia,
usually when people write in caps locks, they don't understand the concepts of upper case or lower case .

to all commenting on the architecture, why don't you all wear ghonnella so you can fit well in what you describe vernacular city

I dare say the air is polluted but the colours are pretty. And in sunny, polluted Malta, a daily occurrence. Vernacular Maltese architecture is of course about incredibly beautiful Baroque churches, wayside chapels, niċeċ (niches containing religious statuary and crude effigies being devoured by rising flames, their mangled eyes looking skywards (at the tower at Portomaso) or in painful supplication. These are features of great interested to interested tourists. And for teaching the young ones about their heritage. However, these beautiful architectural gems can not be replicated. Not in 2009. I have never seen the tower. The crane in silhouette on the horizon is what put it there. More to come I shouldn't wonder. Fields are wonderful. But so are cityscapes with beautiful, modern buildings. In silhouette. Against a Maltese sunset. Rejoice.

What a shame - a beautiful photo ruined by a massive ugly tower that is a real eye sore.

The picture depicts a grotesque sore thumb rising from a future albeit expensive slum area totally out of sync with local traditions and environment adorned by ugly and dangerous tower cranes. The saving grace of the photo is the lack of detail allowing us to enjoy the colours of the sunset.

Where's the beauty?
One can se ea highly polluted sky, a monstrous phallic building, and a building site!
Plus, it's an amateur photo!!!!!!!!!!!
When it comes to taste...we just don't have it!

The sunset is, indeed, a wonderful sight and one that should never cease to amaze and remind us that some things don't change.
This is despite our best efforts to spoil things, as witnessed by the structures in the foreground.
I suppose life's all about looking beyond the mundane and pedestrian, nowadays.

@C.Cilia
In pyschology its called "narcissism" or "delusions of grandeur"!
In plain English its called "being a pompous old wind-bag!"

Why you always have to use capital letters? don't you know its so frustrating to read an article in capital letters?
And why do you always want to exagerate things

Congratulations for a beautiful sunset picture Nicole.
The monstrosity that mars the Maltese skyline has no place in a Maltese sunset.

THANK HEAVENS FOR SUNSETS,
THANK HEAVENS FOR SUNRISES,
THANK HEAVENS FOR DAWNS,
THANK HEAVENS FOR DUSKS :
THANK HEAVENS WHEN THE HEAVENS
THEIR COLOURS ALTER TO HEAVENLY HUES,
WHO IS AT PLAY TO FIDDLE WITH ALL THESE WONDERS ?
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PLACATING THE MOODS OF MEN ?
NAY FOR CERTAINTY IT IS NOT MAN HIMSELF
THAT SEDUCER OF DESTRUCTION
WHO IN HIS AVARICIOUS QUEST
SEEKS ONLY TO DESTROY WHAT HE SEDUCES:
JUST LOOK AROUND WHAT THE SKIES GRACEFULLY LIGHT
IN A CHAMELEON CHARGE OF WONDROUS HUES
AND IN THAT DIMMING BEAUTY,
BE IT DAWN,OR BE IT DUSK,
BEHOLD THEIR LIES IN ITS DESPICABILITY
THE DESTRUCTION OF THIS SPECTRE OF A SPECULATOR
CALLED MAN - THE SELF-TERMINATOR OF NATURE`S BEAUTY
AND ALL THE COSMIC ORDER IT BRINGS FORTHWITH
ONLY TO BE DESTROYED BY THE GARGANTUAN & IMMORAL
SPECULATIVE APPETITE OF THE PROPERTY SPECULATOR:
LET MAN MARVEL AT NATURE`S BEAUTY
LET MAN LEARN THAT UNLESS ONE WITH NATURE
THAT SAME MAN LEARNS TO BE
ONLY ONE WAY HE IS HEADING
IN TRUTH NOT IN SPECULATION
AND THAT WAY POINTS TO ONLY ONE ROUTE
THE ROUTE OF SELF-DESTRUCTION
THE TERMINATION OF THAT UGLY CREATURE
BEST KNOWN AS THE SPECULATOR!

Sorry to be a wet blanket but by what stretch of imagination is this picture aesthetically pleasing?
