I refer to Josè Herrera's article Bomb Threats At The Courts (May 16).

Bomb threats are surely not something that should be taken lightly or in a humorous manner. The court authorities take this matter very seriously in the interest of the security of those who make use of the court building. It would be plainly irresponsible for any person in authority to ignore such threats.

While I do not contend that such hoaxes occur, I do not share Dr Herrera's alarmist tone. The figures in fact show that since the start of this year there were seven bomb threats at the law courts. Furthermore, it is also worth reminding that over the past two years two people have been charged in court over such misdeeds.

Certainly, it is clear to everyone that the security zone in place at the Courts of Justice does not prohibit lunatics from making an anonymous phone call. It has, however, helped to restrain people entering the courts brandishing scissors, screwdrivers, pen knives, flick knives and the occasional dagger and other things considered dangerous - which are also security threats.

Security and safety at the Courts of Justice will remain matters of high priority to the court administration. In light of this, I appeal to all those affected by such threats to cooperate as much as possible with the authorities so as to minimise the disruption and inconvenience in the courts.
