In my Saturday column, I tossed what might be interpreted as something of a nod of approval in the general direction of Marlene Mizzi.

I'm not labouring under the impression (and yes, the God-awful pun was deliberate) that Ms Mizzi needs, wants or otherwise gives a monkey's about my approval on anything. This having been said, her competitor Louis Grech, who one trusts is going to give her a darn good run for her money, got himself an endorsement from a young chap of impeccable non-Labour and non-chav credentials (and that is not to be interpreted as classist, please, but merely a statement of fact) so perhaps an endorsement from me might do Ms Mizzi some good after all.

Well, consider any such endorsement withdrawn.

It's not anything she's done, just what she wrote on Saturday's paper, not a million pages from my own weekly masterpiece.

The dear lady thought she should, no doubt in concomitance with the relevant decrees issued from on high, go into "general election mode" and promote her cause by attacking the Nationalists on a broad front. This is a peculiar way of going for votes in an election which is based on votes for individuals and not for parties.

Ms Mizzi's effort was rendered more peculiar by the way she slanted her piece as an attack on the Government for not, erm, governing. Now, she has every right to demand this, and in fact, so say all of us, but what does Ms Mizzi think she's going to do from Brussels if (when?) she's elected?

Govern Malta?

I know the Euro-sceptics, one of whom is contesting Ms Mizzi in her own party (weird, I know) think Malta is, actually, governed from Brussels but let's get real here, for a bit, shall we?

There were other aspects to Ms Mizzi's bit that made me laugh and not fondly. She accuses the Nats of demonising Labour and its candidates, apparently fully oblivious of those ruddy great big bill-boards dumping on Gonzi all over the place. Last I checked, Gonzi wasn't actually contesting so, again, what gives?

The thing is, Labour's campaign leaves much to be desired. I imagine that they're taking it as a sort of dry run for the General Election, though since that's four years away, I'm not sure why.

Maybe they're trying to work the prestidigitation that plagues campaigning out of the way. For a definition of presti-what's it's name, refer to the respect for truth and fairness demonstrated in Labour's treatment of Dr Perici Calascione's remarks about hunting.

So there you have it, Marlene Mizzi wants to be elected.

It's up to you, Labour voter, whether to elect her or not. Given that she seems to be adhering to party policy and saying she’s pro-EU and pro-Sant and, for all I know, pro-apple pie and moms and Xmas, then she’s got the credentials.

None that I’m endorsing, however.
