Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has told Parliament that almost a year since Mepa's Environment Protection Directorate started using Hexagon House in Marsa, there was still no approved evacuation procedure. The management was preparing a procedure which was currently being discussed with workers' representatives for health and safety at work.

Dr Gonzi said Hexagon House had started being used by its latest owner, the Environment Protection Directorate, in mid-2008.

As soon as the evacuation procedure was approved, training and drill sessions would get underway. Some members of the workforce had just been certified as first aiders and firefighters, and would play a crucial role in eventual fire drills, with the support of experts in the sector.

Dr Gonzi was answering a parliamentary question by Leo Brincat (PL), who had asked how often evacuation drills were carried out in government departments.

He had specifically asked about Mepa and more particularly about the Environment Protection Directorate at Hexagon House, Marsa.

Consequently, Dr Gonzi said, there had been no fire drills yet, neither at Hexagon House nor at St Francis Ravelin.
