The MEPA board this morning approved the full development permit for the building of a waste transfer station at Tal-Kus near Xewkija in Gozo. The decision was put off by a week because a meeting held last week found that around 40 pages of the online development file were missing because of a technical glitch.
The transfer station will be built by Wasteserv to sort, store and then transfer hazardous and non-hazardous waste to Malta.
Objections were filed by Sannat and Xewkija local councils, who argued that the development was within Mgarr ix-Xini regional park.
MEPA's case officer pointed out that both the local plan and the outline development permit of the park included the waste transfer station.
The transfer station will cover an area of 13,600 square metres and is designed to handle all of Gozo's waste. It will be built on four storeys in a disused quarry with little visual impact from Mgarr ix-Xini. The project includes measures to prevent runoff and leakage of polluting liquids. The waste material will be stored in double skinned tanks.
Gozo's waste started being transferred to Malta following the closure of a landfill at Qortin near Xaghra. The waste will now be sorted and processed before transfer in closed trucks.
The application was approved by all the members of the MEPA board except Labour MP Roderick Galdes.
