In the years between 2001 and 2008 the government paid out some €73 million for land expropriation.

Answering a parliamentary question by Labour MP Noel Farrugia, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said the payments had amounted to Lm27,878,749 up to 2007 and €5,841,521 in 2008.

The figures also included payment for new expropriations.
