A tower crane collapsed onto a building under construction and an apartment block this morning, causing a panic but injuring no one.

The incident happened at about 9.15 a.m. as the remote controlled crane was transferring concrete on a building site in Sacred Heart Avenue in St Julians. It crashed down onto buildings in Birkirkara Road, damaging walls, destroying water tanks and severing electricity cables, causing a power cut.

"There was a huge noise and a panic, it was like an earthquake, people came out running into thje street," one of the residents of the damaged apartments said.

He insisted that the authorities needed to check the safety of such structures and said it was fortunate that no one was injured in the nearby Sacred Heart School.

Construction workers were visibly shocked by what had happened.
