The saga of the reinstatement of non-Maltese EU residents has now been resolved, thanks to the intervention of the Attorney General and for which I thank him. We are now reinstated on the register for the forthcoming EU elections. I am sure that the other 940+ are as pleased as I am.

However, discrimination has again reared its ugly head in respect to non-Maltese EU citizens residing in Malta and in connection with the EHIC or European Health Insurance Card.

I have been reliably informed that whereas the EHIC was renewed for a period of three years for Maltese and non-Maltese alike in the past, the rules would appear to have now been changed in so much that we, non-Maltese EU citizens, are being penalised by having the EHIC renewed for only one year.

I am not aware of why this change has been made but might I remind those in charge that we, as non-Maltese EU citizens residing in Malta, boost the economy with our spending, be it in property or goods on the islands, register for tax purposes and hold a Maltese ID card and furthermore bring friends and relatives to those islands to spend even more to boost the economy.

Come on, Malta, enough is enough!
