Senglea's Maritime Day was a delightful event attended by thousands from all over our historical islands. I dare say that to some it was a journey into the unknown; in recent times my adopted city has not necessarily featured favourably with some Maltese.

I hope those who came witnessed first-hand the warm friendliness that makes Senglea a fantastic place to reside in or visit. Under the watchful eye of Grand Master Fra Claude de la Sengle (statue), the founder of our city, the day developed into a magical experience, with various nautical events running continuously to the entertainment of those assembled. There was a replica submarine, naval dockyard set-up, the functional massive Sheer Legs traditionally known as Il-Maċina demasting a replica sailing vessel as well as numerous displays relating to the glorious time when Senglea was the most important maritime centre within the Grand Harbour.

There was a very touching procession with a small replica statue of the Bambina re-enacting Armistice Day on September 8, 1943, when the Italian navy surrendered.

During the procession that day the bells from the nearly demolished basilica rang to signal the fact. The Sengleans rejoiced and gave thanks to Our Lady.

It is impossible to mention all that went on. The organising committee deserves the highest praise for all the dedication and hard work that turned out such a wonderful day for the enjoyment of so many. I am so very proud to have become an adopted Senglean, so lucky to live in a city not too dissimilar to Venice, another great maritime city.
