The system for the production of new identity cards is still being developed and it is therefore premature to say how the new cards will be distributed, Minister Austin Gatt told Anglu Farrugia (PL) in reply to a parliamentary question.

The project is being coordinated by a team which includes representatives of De La Rue, technical experts from MITA, the Public Registry and the ministry.

The minister said the cards will be issued by the new National Identity Management Office, which includes the Passport Office. Employees currently working in the ID Cards Section will be part of the new Office.

A plan will be drawn up for the secure distribution of the cards in a way which causes the least inconvenience to people. There will be no charge for the replacement of the cards, the minister said.
