The University of Malta will be using EU funds to set up a super-computer laboratory.

The project is being led by the Department of Physics within the Faculty of Science, but the super-computer laboratory will be installed as a university-wide resource and will be available to all students and researchers.

It will be completed in mid-2010, has a total cost of over €650,000 - €400,000 and the remainder of the funds for software and ancillary equipment required for the installation.

At the University, active research interest exists in the faculties of science, architecture, medicine and surgery in fields ranging from particle physics and cosmology to electromagnetics, computational fluid dynamics applied to aerodynamics and air quality, and modelling of complex systems ranging from protein molecules to regional climate.

Research in these areas will be greatly facilitated by the availability of this facility.

The facility will provide local high technology firms with trained graduates and post-graduates capable of promoting R&D in collaboration with the university.

By supporting a larger and more advanced research effort, the facility will enable the university’s technological sustain an increase in Malta’s science graduate population, and to offer opportunities for advanced post-graduate research.

It will help ensure that the graduates of these departments will have the skills required by the country’s move towards a knowledge-based economy.

This project is part-financed by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund 2007 – 2013.
