The Times reported (May 8) that Mepa had approved a holistic design to St George's Square with a slight move of the monument to the Sette Giugno, centring it at the top of the site.

In The Sunday Times (May 10), Minister George Pullicino was quoted as saying that, given that the Sette Giugno monument was intrinsically linked to Parliament, it would be relocated to the new Parliament site. I am to understand, therefore, that it will be completely removed from the square.

In addition, the "facelift" indicates a modern version of the original fountain that was built by the Knights. Thus we are re-instating a fountain, which is commendable - bringing back the memories of 400 years ago.

On the same wavelength we should also recognise that this square is witness to our glorious political history. Heroism, bravery and patriotism reign higher than a water jet fountain.

The fallen of 1919, the execution of Dun Mikiel Xerri and his compatriots, together with the significance of our unsinkable island through gallantry in World War II, should be incorporated in a re-named square.
