Call for a compendium of children's rights

Labour MP Anton Refalo has called for the formulation of a compendium on the rights and responsibilities of children.

Dr Rafalo, who was speaking during a day seminar organised by the Commissioner for Children at the Grand Hotel, Għajnsielem, said this would make it possible to increase awareness of the fundamental rights of children.

The seminar was based on points raised in the Manifesto for Children, a publication issued by the office of the commissioner for children last year, to discuss matters requiring urgent attention with regards to children and young people in Gozo.

Addressing the seminar, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said two new childcare centres were in the pipeline.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue and Information Chris Said said his office had undertaken a process of consultations with local councils on how they can offer improved services for children in various localities. He emphasised the need for regular meetings with children. "The voice and opinions of children are vital," he said.

Children's Commissioner Carmen Zammit encouraged participants to give feedback. She said it was important for the work of the commissioner to be supported by public opinion in order to enable the office to continue working in the best interests of children.
