A penthouse on the eighth floor of an apartment block on the Sliema seafront yesterday morning caught fire while workmen were laying waterproofing membrane.

The police said a patrol in the vicinity noticed smoke coming from the building, which is under construction, and called for assistance. Firemen quickly extinguished the flames and though neighbours were evacuated no one was injured.

Two policemen and two workmen were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
