The Malta Weightlifting Federation has just hosted the European Small Nations Tournament held in conjunction with the second Charles Mifsud International Open.

The two events attracted 41 lifters from Cyprus, Luxembourg, San Marino, Monaco and Malta who were joined with others from Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the German region of Saarland.

The organisation was of a high technical standard following the heavy investment by the federation in the new weightlifting centre at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

Christian Saliba, 16, was among those who left their mark after establishing four national records in the youth category. Another remarkable performance came from Rodmar Pulis, 14. He was the youngest lifter in competition.

Best Maltese lifter overall was Emanuel Schembri, 22. He just missed a record of 151kgs in the Clean and Jerk. Clint Grech, 22, and Stephen Borg, 33, failed to register a total despite a committed effort.

Three local lifters made a debut on the international scene. These were: Clive Zammit, 20, Mark Sapiano, 18, and Clint Sammut, 18. All three had a creditable showing which underlines the federation's dedication to invest in new talent.
