Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, who is appealing his conviction for the Lockerbie bombing, travelled to Malta using a false passport and a false name on the day the bomb was planted at Luqa airport, prosecutor Ronnie Clancy has told Scottish judges. He left the following day, after the bomb exploded on a Pan Am Boeing 747, killing 270.

Malta has always denied that the bomb ever started its journey from here, despite prosecution claims in the original trial that is was placed on a flight to Frankfurt and then on to Heathrow.

Dr Clancy said al Megrahi's visit to Malta was unexplained, and no evidence had been presented on the use of this passport.

The defence is arguing that a reasonable jury would not have convicted al Megrahi as evidence linking him to the bombing was insufficient.
