I recently accompanied my aunt to visit her husband at the Respite Unit at St Vincent de Paul home for the elderly.
I was impressed not only by the cleanliness of the place itself but also by the sterling service our elderly are constantly being given and for this I would like thank and congratulate heartily the whole team for their fantastic job.
Yet, I was equally unimpressed by the lack of transport facilities that exist in order to reach the place considering that four buses need to be taken to and fro. This is very hard for those who cannot drive, taking also into consideration the adverse weather conditions.
I would like to bring to the attention of all those concerned that various people of different age brackets go to visit their respective relatives, and surely they cannot walk all that distance on foot sometimes carrying with them a heavy load of personal belongings.
In this respect one wonders whether a scheduled bus service can be organised from all towns and villages in the same manner as is done in order to go to Mater Dei Hospital, giving the visitors a complete transport service up to the respite unit.
I hope that my appeal will finally be taken seriously after I learnt that previous requests have been made verbally to various ministers to no avail.
