@ A M Bartolo: What your mum use to say: there are many fish in the sea, is just a saying. What counts is the reality, are there really enough fish in the sea? You seem to be quite knowledgeable about this, can you illuminate me as to regards to fish population. For all I recall many fish are declining, just see the anual lampuki catches. But maybe you prefer to believe that they are increasing just so that you may continue to eat lampuki? As for birds turtle doves and quail, the only 2 species that we want to hunt in spring, are classified as least concern, in the EU birds directive annex. @mark Balzan Societies do evolve. NO problem, but just saying that hunting has to stop due to, loss of biodiversity is just using a hype term to justify your opinion. If your opinion was backed sientifically, then why do other countries allow hunting even in spring? Is Malta so modern, that it superpassed EU countries in conservation. Banning hunting will actually degrade the environment. I for one will no longer preserve and water my trees&fields, and rebuild rubble walls. So not only 2 species will be effected

Re Hunting and fishing - it's a question of numbers. Like my mum used to say in quite a different context, "there are many fish in the sea". :-) However, with regards to birds, we all know that's a different story. One cannot start to compare the two. Just like it is impossible to compare hunting of sharks (which is thankfully impossible in Malta) with, say, lampuki fishing.
Oh, and nice pic. :-)

@ Mr. John Scerri. Your argument does not make much sense. For much time, societies worldwide did not recognise the limits poised by the environment. Today more people are aware of their environmental impact, whether it is through hunting, burning fossil fuels, agriculture and fishing, waste production, etc. The case of the Maltese Islands is even more extreme. We live in a tiny place surrounded by a highly modified and diverse environment. It is important that we become more aware of this and work to preserve and conserve our environment and if possible work on restoring environmental conditions. I personally think that hunting and fishing definitely need to be tackled more seriously and we must make sure that conservation of the organisms is ensured, at least so that our children would be as fortunate as ourselves to be able to see these beatiful creatures which coinhabit our environment.

How many fish in Malta?
Just check official data relating to the number of registered boats as AMATURE fisherman.
Or informally just check the jetties and coast especially fishing for squid at circewa, bugiba, marfa..+.....
You can also check the number of clubs/websites available or better still the number of shops. I doubt at least a shop in practically every village is open for just a couple of fishermen.
As for the area arguemnet, so if I was born in an place which is densly populated, has been built in a very unsustainable manner, its my fault. Hunters who have chosen to retain land from building (prior to when mepa or any laws were present) in order to farm and hunt, have to now give up their hobby, since one day Mr. Joe Public decided that Malta is too small for us. So if land was no prop, hunting would be ok for you? Plain greed for what you dont have?
For all I know fishing and hunting give the same result, a dead animal.
However, instead of objectfully educating and politly debating you chose to insult and mention a popular maltese phrase 'thalat il hass mal basal'.

What a beautiful picture - beauty and serenity all in one. Yesterday's sunset was lovely too. I forward these to all my friends abroad - what better way to advertise Malta?

Jin sajjied u kaccatur.
Meta nistad naqbad il hut bhala delizju, u biex niklu.
Meta nmur al kacca naqbad ghasfur bhala delizju u biex niklu.
Spjegali din, kif nista nikol huta u ghasfur le.
Mela ghasfur andu hajtu iktar prezjuza min ta huta?
I sajjied bil qasba ma jmurx al hut biex jaqbad ikla, kiku ilu mejjet bil guh, imur ad delizju, umbad li jaqdad jiklu. Kaccatur listes jamel.
Nejdlek wahda, il hut iktar ta hsara mil kacca, ax mandekx kontrol. La em season, la em regoli u mem xejn. Bhekk tamel kem tamel hsara u taqbad kem taqbad u taqbad xtaqbad kollox ok.
il kacca giet illegali mux ax hazina, jew ax kin qed issir hsara lil xi speci, ax ironikament il gemmiem u summien qied iklassifikat bhala 'least conservation concern' fl annex tal bird directive.
Ima memx xtamel li jidispjacini hi li meta animal imut ad delizju ta sijjied jew al ikel hadd ma jejd xejn. ima ax asfur jinqatel min kaccatur isir rewixta.
memx xtamel isa flok asfur noqtol huta bhekk jew bhekk doletant tal hut ukoll.

Why would you let them back into the sea if you goto catch them for some fresh fish soup?

But when are we going to stop telling everyone what one should do being whatever one is doing? When are we going to take a picture for what it shows and nothing else? So many experts........ I wonder why we are in such a topsy turvy world. The picture,or rather the photographer must have had a really sharp eye to 'catch' the fisherman. Punto e Basta!

I read the comments comparing fishing to game shooting with some amusement. Couple of points which I cannot resist, firstly this is a photo and should be appreciated for its excellence as a photographic item. Secondly, maybe the Maltese can get into the habit of
letting the fish go back into the sea after they are caught - this will definitely defeat the hunting lobby.

Ghax bhalli kieku is-sajjied se jaghzel liema huta se tibla s-sunnara!!!
Hallina tridx.
Il-fatt hu li dak is-sajjied qed jghaddi siegha bi kwietu jgawdi d-delizzju tieghu bhalma jaghmel kaccatur (kieku hallewh) u milli jidher anqas lil dan is-sajjied m'huma se jibqghu ihalluh igawdi.

@ S Mizzi ....
iva l-istorja kienet tkun HAFNA differenti kieku kien kaccatur ghax il-kaccja illegali ... is-sajd le ... u probabbilment dan is-sajjied jistad biex il-hut jiehdu d-dar u jieklu u mhux bhala divertiment, hobby jew "l-aqwa il nisparaw lejn xi haga"
