Vandals strike at Romeo Romano Garden
The vandals' work at Romeo Romano.
Vandals have struck at Romeo Roman Gardens in Sta Venera, using drip irrigation pipes to lasso and pull down a statue in the middle of the central fountain.
Mayor Elizabeth Vella told timesofmalta.com that she was informed of the incident by the gate keeper at 9 p.m. yesterday. The incident, she said, must have happened between 6 and 8 p.m. The gate keeper is only responsible to open and close the gate.
Mrs Vella said that the the garden was also targeted a few weeks ago when statues of children in the centre of another fountain were 'beheaded'.

I heard these vandals returned to complete what they started and were caught, now I hope an example will be set and not the usual suspended sentences handed over. If not it will be a free for all message for all vandals round the island.

To Dennis Agius.
I'm sorry Dennis Agius but I do not agree, I am a 21 year old and never did these stupid things. Also I have never been to a school like you have mentioned.
The Problem is that hefty penalties are not given and not the school one attends. The Law needs a revamp. And anyone caught under 18 should still be subject to a trial, even if the person is 12 years old. Age is no excuse. After a 12 year old is sent to prison I'm sure parents will take note.

In Malta there are enough morons to go around.
However, and this from my experience in dealing with young people, once the culprits are caught, then the worst punishment that can be inficted upon them is to make them pay for the damages. Not for repairs to be carried out by them or their fathers, but for others to earn money from their stupidity. This should set them straight.
The problem with authroities is that they treat these cases with velvet gloves and do not realise the moral harm that these morons do to the rest of society by destroying what is there to be enjoyed by normal people

Wasn't a CCTV camera installed in this garden at a point in time?

What do we expect? We had a gang vandalising our love ones graves last Christmas and once they were caught everybody was appealing to authorities to close an eye (or even two) as they where just "kids", and authorities obeyed. Until this sense of inpunity will be with us acts like these and worst will be order of the day.

What kind of perverted fun is this? What do these vandals hope to achieve?
What lack of artistic sensibilities!!!
What sad cases - I pity them whoever they are!!!

The councils should work more to protect luxury places like the one above from the clutches of such blasphemers.

May the vandals be caught and get what they deserve according to law.
If the culprits happen to be under the age of 18, then they should be subjected to a minimum of 6 months Boot Camp !!!!
Has anybody heard of : Neighbourhood Watch ?!

Really sad - this is such a beautiful and quiet garden - Sta Veneral should be proud to have in its boundaries such a garden. Every effort should be made to bring the culprits to justice.

How sad. Such a pity that such places (rare in Malta), where one can find peace, quiet and fresh air, are not fully appreciated by all. Such a garden should be on tourist brochures, which might ensure that vandals cannot operate with such ease. Of course, there is a downside to that. The beauty of solitude will disappear. And the environs will get cluttered with tacky touristy paraphernalia.
But maybe not. Hastings Gardens has retained its air of solitude despite the tourists. But then they do not arrive in coachloads. Romeo Roman Garden is off the beaten track. Its valuable asset - seclusion - is what makes it vulnerable to abuse by morons.

There may be cctv signs but are there cctv cameras?! I'm starting to wonder.

Well, if there are signs at the entrance, they certainly did not act as deterrants.
Wonder if these vandals were captured on cameras...

Between 6 and 8pm
That's broad daylight, d*mmit!
When will we start installing CCTV's around these places?
They're more effective than humans.
