There are 895 illegal immigrants who are gainfully employed and paying taxes and National Insurance contributions, while two others are registered as employers.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech gave the information in Parliament in reply to a question by Owen Bonnici (PL).

He pointed out that the figures only went back to 2003. The Department of Inland Revenue was not in a position to give the corresponding figures for the years 1998 to 2002.
